![]() ![]() #3 and this one is the one I’m most hung up on. #2 wanted tinted glass for the front panel of the overflow box but the cost was way to much so I’m leaning towards painting it now I’ve had a couple of y’all say you have used spray painted items in the tank with no issue, what side of the glass should I paint? Originally I was thinking the inside but wondered if the water constantly flowing over it would cause the paint to come off and contaminate the tank? Is that possible or should I just paint the side facing the tank and not worry about it? #1 the front piece of the overflow box should it be parallel with the back glass or slightly tilted towards the front of the tank to allow the water to slide down the glass? I think 1/4 annealed glass glass will be fine? And thinking about getting one long edge on each piece polished up real nice, the edges I could cut myself on lol, the rest of the edges should be covered in silicone, I’ll have the rest of the edges sanded but not polished. Talked to a sweet lady at a glass shop about cutting glass for my coast to coast overflow box and the 2 pieces of glass is going to run me around $50 and up depending on what I want. Figured that would give me plenty of strength between the holes and not make a weak point. I have my template made up, 3 holes, first is 5” from the edge then there’s 3” of glass between each hole. They arrived a couple of weeks ago but with work going crazy I haven’t had time to drill the tank yet. So I actually changed my mind and took Jerry’s suggestion and ordered 1” bulkheads and drill bit. I am thinking once I get the stand built I’ll set it up outside with some kind of sump and see if everything is working properly before moving day. I think I can get away with the bulkheads sticking out but the pipe hanging off would get messed up. That’s the reason for the screw in side of the bulkhead is on the outside of the tank. But everything I build I have to be able to disassemble to make it easier when moving day comes. Kind of scared to drill/grind the tank but excited to get this project moving forward. Would like it more if it was 20”+ to help with the overflow sound Found a 15” one and might have to just go that route. Was thinking going coast to coast overflow box but dang those are outrageous expensive. Thinking i will go ball valves on all but the primary and use a gate valve on that one not sure if there’s a benefit from the gate over ball valve. I decided to go 1 1/2 bulkheads and drains. Most of it was pointless and people criticizing the design but did learn a lot. So I broke down spent hours reading the thread on the bean animal drain, 40 something pages worth. Just be careful not to torque the glass and shatter the back. The bulkheads I got were slip/slip I can see it would be easier to dis-assemble with threaded outside. That is for 1 inch bulkheads larger bulk head more room.Ī lot depends on the overflow box you get. The spacing between holes on the template I got is a hair over 1 1/2 inches. You could drill 2 holes move template and drill number 3 you would have to buy a 3rd bulk head. I ordered a bulkhead kit with bulkheads, hole saw and a nice little plastic template like this.īut it only had 2 holes in template and 2 bulkheads. And remember a Herbie or Bean Animal has a gate valve in the design. A street elbow doesn't take as much but the larger the pipe the larger the elbow. Look at the depth (front to back) of the over flow A PVC elbow takes up a certain amount of room. The overflow box may decide how large your bulk heads can be. Most likely you will have to put the box on after you install the bulkheads, not a lot of room in there. ![]() I’m sure I’ll have all kinds of questions about the plumbing on the outside of the tank but figured I would start with the plumbing inside the overflow box and go from there #4 slip or threaded bulkheads, bts has them in every combination you can think of, I’m leaning towards slip on inside the overflow box and threaded on the back side of the tank that way if the bulkhead ever has to be removed I can easier #3 I’m assuming I will want the bulkheads as close to the bottom of the overflow box as I can get, then an elbow coming up, then my primary secondary and emergency lines plumbed into the elbows that’s inside the overflow box that’s inside the tank? #2 how close is to close to drill the holes? I don’t want the glass to have a weak point because the holes are to close Would I rather go slightly larger then needed and use a gate valve to adjust the flow? #1 What size pvc pipe to feed the sump with? I see brs has a ton of different sizes so unsure what size is proper for this use. I know I want to run a bean animal overflow, thinking one overflow box on the left side of the tank and return on the right. So I’m looking at ordering my bulkheads for my 150 gal build.
